Support help with Etude
How can we help?
Write to hello@etude.study with what you were doing, what you expected and what happened. A screenshot helps. A person reads every message, usually within two working days.
I. questions
Common questions.
Is Etude free?
Yes. The app is free and open source, with no ads and nothing to buy inside it. Etude Sync, which keeps several devices in step, is an optional subscription you can buy on this website.
Do I need an account?
No. Without an account Etude keeps everything on your device and sends us nothing. You need an account only for Sync.
Where is my collection stored?
On your device. On a phone it lives in the app's own storage; on a computer it's in the .etude folder in your home folder. With Sync on, an encrypted copy is also kept on our server so your other devices can fetch it. We can't read that copy.
How do I back up or move my collection?
Turn on Sync, or export your decks as packs (open a deck, then Manage → Export as a pack) and import them on the other device. On a computer, etude db backup copies the whole collection.
How do I bring my Anki decks over?
Import the .apkg or .colpkg file from the Decks page. Notes, cards, media and review history come along.
How does AI grading work, and where does my answer go?
AI grading is off until you turn it on in Settings → AI grading with a key from OpenRouter, OpenAI or a compatible server, or sign in to ChatGPT. When it's on, the card and your answer go from your device straight to that provider, under your account with it. Etude never receives them. Cards that don't need AI are graded on your device.
Is it safe to install card types from the Market?
Card types are small programs, so each one runs in a sealed sandbox. It can draw the card and report your answer. It can't reach the internet, your other cards or the rest of the app. If a Market entry looks wrong or offensive, report it to hello@etude.study and we'll take it down.
I forgot my Sync password.
Use the recovery key Etude showed you when you set up Sync. It opens your collection and lets you choose a new password. We can't reset it for you, because we never have it. Your devices keep their collections either way. More on the Sync page.
How do I cancel Sync or get a refund?
Cancel from the link in your Polar receipt or from your account page at sync.etude.study/account. Sync runs to the end of the period you paid for, and nothing on your devices is deleted. Refunds follow the Refund Policy: write to hello@etude.study.
II. your data
Delete your account and data.
If you never made an account, we hold nothing about you. Uninstalling the app deletes your collection from the device.
If you have an account, you can delete it and everything we keep about you in three ways:
In the app
Open Settings → Account and choose Delete account. Type your email address to confirm. If you last signed in more than 10 minutes ago, Etude asks you to sign in again first.
On the web
Once Sync opens, sign in at sync.etude.study/account and choose Delete account. Until then, write to hello@etude.study.
By email
Write to hello@etude.study from the address on your account and ask us to delete it. We confirm by email and delete it within 30 days, usually much sooner.
Deleting your account removes, right away, your email address, display name, devices, passkeys and your entire encrypted collection from our server, and stops your subscription link. Encrypted backups roll over within 35 days. Two things stay, as the law requires or for security: records of paid Market purchases, kept 6 years for tax with only a hash of your email, and our security log of sign-ins, kept 12 months. Cancel an active Sync subscription first so you aren't charged again.
Deleting the account doesn't delete the collection on your devices. Remove the app (or the .etude folder on a computer) to delete that too.
All of it is in the Privacy Policy.
Still stuck?
Email hello@etude.study. Etude is made by one person, and he answers.
